What to Know: The Feel of a Real Community

By Grant· Inspired by an OC Living video· South Orange County, CA
A frame from Grant's Orange County Living video: the feel of a real community in South Orange County

You can tour a hundred houses and still miss the most important feature: the neighbors. This post is the written companion to one of Grant's Orange County Living videos, embedded below, about the community ingredient.

Community is the amenity

Master-planned places like The Ranch engineer the good stuff on purpose: pools, parks, trails, and a calendar that pulls neighbors out of their houses. Older towns like San Juan Capistrano get community from history and habit. Both versions work, and they just taste different on a Saturday.

  • Clubs, classes, and pickleball for the social calendar
  • Trails and parks that make the block a playground
  • Events that get neighbors out of their houses
  • A farmers market as the weekly town square
  • Neighbors who say hello whether you buy or not

When you tour, ask one question of everyone you meet: what do you love most about living here? The answers, not the price per square foot, are the real community report card.

Watch with a map open and drop a pin on everything the tour passes.

The video for this post is playing right above, and the OC Living channel has plenty more tours wherever this one takes you.
